  5. INTRODUCTION
  6.  
  7. TIRAMISU is a software for reconstructing data from a crashed hard drive.
  8. It helps when the drive is
  9.  
  10.     - hit by a virus
  11.     - formatted
  12.     - 'fdisk'ed
  13.     - zapped by a power failure
  14.     - damaged by applications
  15.  
  16. TIRAMISU scans the drive even when there are physical damages. The found
  17. data are analyzed and reconstructed. TIRAMISU can handle drives without
  18. readable boot sector, readable Fat or readable directories. It can
  19. handle drives that are not recognized by DOS anymore.
  20.  
  21. TIRAMISU automatically creates a VIRTUAL DRIVE in memory. This virtual drive
  22. looks like a usual file manager. You can see the lost directories and files
  23. of your crashed drive. Now files and directories can be viewed and copied
  24. to a safe medium.
  25.  
  26. The extensive use of our sophisticated pattern recognition technology
  27. enables TIRAMISU to put the right pieces of data together again. Even
  28. disks with very few administrative informations left can reach a high
  29. recovery quality.
  30. TIRAMISU recovers much more data than any other 'disk doctor'.
  31.  
  32. TIRAMISU is NON DESTRUCTIVE and READ ONLY. It does not put any data onto
  33. your crashed drive. Recovered data are restored to another destination
  34. (disk, diskette, network, interlink).
  35.  
  36. TIRAMISU works on DOS and Windows platforms. Better Windows95 support
  37. has been added in version 1.03. Multi partition recovery has been added
  38. in version 2.0.
  39.  
  40. A version for NOVELL is available too. A version for HPFS is under
  41. development.

  44. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  45.  
  46. - 286 processor and up
  47. - 4 MB RAM and up
  48.  
  49. Depending on the size of the drive to be recovered we recommend a 486 with
  50. 8 MB RAM. Installing 5 MB of EMS (Version 4) is recommended.

  53. GETTING STARTED
  54.  
  55. 1) Boot diskette
  56.  
  57. Create a boot diskette with a CONFIG.SYS similar to this:
  58.  
  59.         files=25
  60.         device=himem.sys
  61.         device=emm386.exe
  62.  
  63. Make sure you have specified the correct drive parameters in BIOS setup.
  64. Boot the computer and start the program TIRAMISU.EXE.
  65.  
  66.  
  67. 2) Specify swap area
  68.  
  69. By default TIRAMISU uses EMS as swap area. If for some reason there is
  70. no or not enough EMS you can specify a swap area on disk.
  71. Select OPTION -> DATA RECOVERY, tag 'DISK ALLOWED', specify path.
  72. CAUTION: Do not swap to the drive you intend to recover.

  75. 3) Hit RECOVER for the drive you want to recover. You can switch between
  76.    the drive using the TAB key.
  77.  
  78. TIRAMISU starts processing. Depending on your system's speed and the size
  79. of your drive this can take 5 minutes or even up to 1 hour.

  82. 4) Copy some or all files to a safe medium using F7
  83.  
  84. Now you see the virtual drive and you can view and copy (registered
  85. version only) the files to any DOS-available destination.

  87. THAT'S IT! ISN'T IT EASY?

  90. RESTRICTIONS
  91.  
  92. TIRAMISU handles only drives with 16-Bit Fats, which applies to most
  93. systems. Only old (10 MB) drives have another Fat (12-Bit).
  94.  
  95. Since TIRAMISU is very memory hungry, your PC might run
  96. out of memory. If you face this problem, install a memory manager with as
  97. much RAM and EMS as possible.
  98. Watch the available memory displayed at the bottom line. The value displayed
  99. at the far right shows the free RAM. The E:XXX shows the free EMS and the
  100. F:XXX shows the fragmentation.
  101. The RAM should not go below 50000.
  102.

  104. OPTIONS
  105.  
  106. There are several options you can change in the OPTIONS->DATA RECOVERY
  107. screen.
  108.  
  109. - Swap Area
  110. By default TIRAMISU stores memory intensive data in EMS. If your have no
  111. or not enough EMS available you can allow swapping to a drive. Be sure to
  112. choose a drive you are not just recovering.
  113.  
  114. - Excluded Main Directory Entries
  115. This option tells TIRAMISU to ignore files entries that have been created
  116. during a previous run of another disk doctor (Norton, Scandisk,...).
  117.  
  118. - Logging
  119. Use this option to create a log file of TIRAMISU's processing. This might
  120. be interesting for debug purposes.
  121.  
  122. - Automatic Identification
  123. The first thing TIRAMISU does is to retrieve the original structure of
  124. the file system: place of Fat1, Fat2, main directory, number of sectors
  125. per cluster, number of clusters.
  126. If you tag off this option TIRAMISU shows you what it thinks what kind
  127. of file system it found. Usually you confirm this by pressing OK. If you
  128. can not confirm the structure TIRAMISU found, you can continue the
  129. identification procedure by pressing SEARCH AGAIN. After a while TIRAMISU
  130. will make a new proposal.

  132. - Start Identification At Sector X
  133. By default TIRAMISU starts its identification procedure at sector 0.
  134. However you might be interested in recovering another but the first
  135. partition. Then you can enter a value in this field.
  136. Example: Let's suppose you have a 600 MB drive with two partions (400 MB
  137. and 200 MB). You want to recover the second (200 MB) partition. The first
  138. partition uses 400 MB space on the hard drive. These are approximately
  139. 800000 sectors (one sector has 512 bytes). Consequently you should enter
  140. the value 800000 in this field.
  141. You should tag the "Automatic Identifation" off. So you can verify if
  142. TIRAMISU retrieved the correct file system structure.
  143.  
  144. - Bad File Entry Acceptance
  145. TIRAMISU uses statistical algorithms to decide if file entries are
  146. included into the recovery process. If you set this option to 0
  147. TIRAMISU is very strict. If you set it to 100 TIRAMISU is very loose.
  148. 50 is a good value. Increase it if you miss some files in the resulting
  149. virtual drive. Decrease it if you get scrambled results.

  152. TROUBLE SHOOTING
  153.  
  154. Sometimes you might think the computer is frozen and TIRAMISU is
  155. crashed. Be patient! Some procedures might take up to one hour. If
  156. TIRAMISU crashes you usually get an error code.
  157.  
  158. If you get only scrambled results this could be due to the TIRAMISU
  159. drive structure recognition routine. Try this:
  160. Select OPTION -> DATA RECOVERY, tag 'AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION' off.
  161. Press RECOVER. After a while you get a window that proposes a certain
  162. drive structure. If you are not satisfied with what you see you can
  163. press 'Search Again'. TIRAMISU tries to retrieve another structure.
  164. Finally press 'Ok'.
  165.  
  166. You can change the Option "Bad file entry acceptance". 0% means a
  167. very strong directory recognition routine. Use only if TIRAMISU crashes.
  168. 100% means a very loose directory recognition routine. Use if TIRAMISU
  169. goes through but you miss some directories. 50% is a good standard value.
  170.  
  171. You should not use any other 'disk doctor' before running TIRAMISU. If you
  172. did so, please 'undo'.
  173. If you cannot 'undo' you can tell TIRAMISU to ignore the file entries
  174. the 'disk doctor' created (something like FILE0000.CHK...).
  175. Select OPTION -> DATA RECOVERY, modify the field 'Exclude Main
  176. Directory Entries'.

  184. REGISTRATION
  185.  
  186. TIRAMISU IS DISTRIBUTED AS SHAREWARE. FEEL FREE TO COPY, DISTRIBUTE OR
  187. UPLOAD IT TO ANY MEDIUM. The unregistered version has all functions
  188. for recovering your crashed hard drive. But only the registered version
  189. of TIRAMISU allows you to COPY files from your recovered drive.
  190.  
  191. There are two kinds of licenses available:
  192.  
  193.     - A limited version that can only be used for a PERIOD OF ONE WEEK.
  194.       In effect this is a PAY PER USE registration. The fee is
  195.       DM 145 (approximately US $99).
  196.     - An unlimited version that can be used for an UNLIMITED PERIOD at
  197.       one computer at the same time. The fee is DM 290 (approximately
  198.       US $198).

  200. The registration procedure is this:
  201.  
  202.     - Run TIRAMISU and check if it can restore your data (VIEW your files)
  203.  
  204.     - Select REGISTRATION->REGISTRATION. You will be asked to insert a
  205.       diskette in drive A:. Please have ready a blank formatted 1.44 MB or
  206.       1.2 MB diskette. This diskette will become your license diskette 
  207.       later. Be aware that any data on this diskette might be damaged 
  208.       during this procedure.
  209.       If you encounter any problems please try it again using a fresh 
  210.       formatted and error free diskette.
  211.       Finally you will be shown a 16- or 17-letter code.

  213.     - Submit this code to the TIRAMISU registration service (preferably
  214.       by fax, use the form you can find in REGISTER.TXT):

  228.     - Specify the kind of license you want to purchase (7 days license or
  229.       unlimited license). Send the money or credit card information (VISA, 
  230.       MASTERCARD or DINERS).

  232.     - The registration key will be forwarded to you immediately by fax
  233.       or email.
  234.  
  235.     - After receiving the registration key from us, please insert the 
  236.       prepared diskette. Start TIRAMISU. Select REGISTRATION->REGISTRATION. 
  237.       Enter the received key in the registration screen.
  238.  
  239.     - Ready! Now you can use COPY to save your data.
  240.  
  241. IMPORTANT: Label the diskette as your license diskette. You will need it 
  242. anytime you run TIRAMISU. The license diskette can not be duplicated.
  243. This is a copy protection.
  244.  
  245. The limited license allows you to recover data only from one
  246. computer. It is not valid for other systems. (This restriction does not
  247. apply for the unlimited license.)
